ghosts of the past

Do you know the Owls jumper? this one (picture linked from owner website):

It is beautiful, and a lovely example of creative thinking (sequin eyes) within a traditional format (cabled yoke jumper). And then there is the baby version, Owlet. The designer, Kate Davies, does a lot of beautiful designs, and may have a thing for animal motifs (Sheep Heid springs to mind – love it!).

I would love to make this jumper, and yet somehow, I just can’t bring myself to try it – I am haunted by memories of reading The Owl Service by Alan Garner when I was maybe 11 or 12. Maybe I should re-read it, see if I can remove that sense of creepy and just be happy to see the patterns.

  1. The Owl Service is one of the scariest books I have ever read. In fact I can only read a precis of it now in case feathers turn into claws. The more you understand the book, the scarier it is.
Maybe they are not owls, maybe they are Tawny Frogmouths, they’re not owls at all but looks a bit the same. It could be your Tawny Frogmouth Jumper!!!

  2. It’s not just you, chickie – I immediately thought of The Owl Service when I saw that jumper, and have avoided it ever since. Creepy, creepy stuff. Owlet was one of the patterns I looked at for my nephew when he was born, but I just couldn’t put that on a baby, in case something mythic happened.
