We had the most glorious spring day today – vibrantly blue sky, that green smell of freshly mown grass, bees buzzing in the flowering shrubs, washing drying swiftly in the light breezes – the kind of day that people mean when they talk about lovely spring weather. We have recently had, and should have again before the end of the week, the other kind of spring weather – cold, rainy, windy, unpredictable – which only makes today’s effort all the more spectacular.
Of course, such beautiful warmth outside made it impossible to eat breakfast inside, so I sat out in the sunshine with my tea and magazines and knitting and dogs, and lasted until the end of that cup of tea – I just couldn’t sit still! I grabbed gloves and secateurs and weeded and pruned and trimmed bushes outside the rumpus room windows, swept away rubbish and weeds and had the MOMD move the picnic table into the sunshine. I turned deaf ears upon any requests for devices that require children to look at a screen, brought out hats and sunscreen and thereafter found it impossible to sit in my new spot in the sunshine and read due to the laughing, arguing, talking and various sound effects coming from my three children and two dogs rampaging around the backyard. Hoist on my own petard!
All this family activity was especially nice as today was the Man Of My Dreams’ and my 12th wedding anniversary. Aside from a little extra effort with dinner we didn’t do anything in particular to celebrate, but a few times today we had some moments to ourselves to just chat quietly about the garden, or the house, or future plans, and it was good. We know we are fortunate in our healthy children and fulfilling jobs, and fortunate to be such good friends – sometimes we just need to find five minutes to catch up with each other in the welter of family chores and work commitments, but I think that if we can keep this up we’ll be good for at least another 40 years!
